Inspiration
Orchid Bay draws inspiration for architectural design from the three great empires which left their mark on Belize: Mayan, British and Spanish. These mighty empires were in turn influenced by the natural beauty and wealth of Belize.
You too can discover what the Mayans knew millennia ago - this is a great place to live! The Mayan empire encompassed Southern Mexico, Guatemala and Northern Belize. They built cities and temples throughout the area now called the Mayan Riviera. The Mayan ruin of Cerros is across the Bay of Chetumal from Orchid Bay. The Mayans recognized the benefits of building on this beautiful and protected bay, teeming with delicious seafood.
History
The British fought to make Belize part of their empire because of its abundance of hardwoods, such as teak and mahogany. Now you can enjoy including these same beautiful, exotic woods in your Orchid Bay home design. British classical architecture, language and common law are part of Belize, past and present.
The Spanish empire colonized the countries surrounding Belize. It is easy to see why the Spanish fought the British in the 1700’s to try to make it their own. The friendly relationship between Belize and its neighbors is reflected in the Free Trade Zone at the border with Mexico. From Orchid Bay, you can go to Chetumal, Mexico, a modern city of approximately 350,000 people, for shopping (Sam’s Club, Home Depot, etc.), dining, and medical care.
Influences
Another British influence on Belize is its history of providing sanctuary for people seeking freedom. Over the centuries, Belize offered safe haven to escaped slaves, Mennonites, Indians, and even pirates. In turn, these new citizens brought needed skills and resources to Belize. Belize has 6 different cultures, with 8 different languages. This diversity has resulted in a society of great tolerance and no political unrest.
Discover freedom for yourself in Belize - the freedom of lower taxes and lower cost of living, and the freedom of living in a safe and secure community.
