History & Culture of Belize

Tucked away in the Western Caribbean, you will find the less-traveled, peaceful country of Belize. Belize is a sovereign, democratic state of Central America located south of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Mestizo, Creole, Maya and Garifuna cultures make up more than 90% of the population, but Belizean life is rich with residents of many other ethnic, geographic and racial backgrounds. This diversity has resulted in a society of great tolerance and no political unrest.

Holidays and Events

March 9 - Baron Bliss Day
Celebrations held nationwide to honor this great benefactor of Belize. Harbor regatta held in front of the lighthouse where he is buried. Cycle race and kite contests are also held in Belize City.

March - La Ruta Maya Canoe River Challenge
Four-day canoe race retracing the route of the ancient Maya. Starts in San Ignacio and ends in Belize City.

June - Dia de San Pedro
Three day festival honoring St. Peter, the patron saint of San Pedro. Early morning boat parade. Boats and fishermen are blessed.

September 21 - Independence Day
Numerous cultural, religious and sporting activities. Flag-raising ceremony, parades, music dance and food countrywide. Carnival parade in Orange Walk Town.
