LUNAR ECLIPSE - This week, I viewed the lunar eclipse from the dock at Orchid Bay. Watching an eclipse is always a cool experience, but when you have an opportunity to observe it away from the lights of cities and suburbs, it is spectacular!
Maya Moon Goddess - Ix Chel
In a truly dark sky, the Milky Way appears as a cloud of stars and the light from the moon far exceeds any other light source. As I watched, the earth’s shadow overtook the moon. I looked the shoreline on my right. There in the darkness opposite the Maya Beach casitas are being built, is what we believe to be the remnants of an ancient Maya dock.
I marveled at the realization the eclipse I was watching had been predicted by Maya astronomers over a thousand years ago. Just as I stood looking up at the moon in 2008, ancient Mayans may have watched an eclipse from the stone dock centuries ago.
Instead of a "man in the moon" the Maya saw a moon goddess holding a rabbit. I think I caught a glimpse of her! Orchid Bay is great place for star gazing. You can experience it for yourself by joining us on one of our upcoming tours.
There is a solar eclipse on August 16. Wouldn’t you like to see it from Orchid Bay?

A DAY OF GOLD - Our friend Jim Hardesty recently brought a group of folks to visit Orchid Bay as part of his Mayan Riviera Tour. While it is hard to have a bad day at Orchid Bay, this one was particularly spectacular. Our Site Manager Fernando Allamilla referred to it as "a day of gold."
Arriving at the dock
"Everyone on the tour was immediately captivated by the waterfront including the beach, trees, orchids, palapa and dock."
With the refreshments concluded, we headed out on our walking tour.

Circus at Bath - the inspiration for Orchid Bay's El Caracol
The day started with beautiful weather in Corozal. We had the palapa
terrace reserved at Tony's Inn. Ryan Wroble delivered a great presentation
on Belize law and history. From there, it was a very short and calm boat
ride around Lowery's Peninsula to the dock at Orchid Bay.
Everyone was immediately captivated by the waterfront, including the
beach, trees, orchids, palapa and dock. We gathered under the palapa for
a delicious snack of ceviche, chicken salad sandwiches and cold drinks,
which Ferni and Danira had prepared. While everyone ate, I talked
(surprise) about Orchid Bay and the different points of interest.
With the refreshments concluded, we headed out on our walking tour. We
went down the beach to the cabins, which everyone loved. We proceeded down
Orchid Bay Blvd. and around Pescadores Park.
We continued down Orchid Bay Blvd. past the groves and on to the
"Sphere" (the water tower circle). The story about the Chakra's,
the Mayan Tree and King Pikal really resonated with the group. One
gentleman was particularly excited about it because he has a number of
friends and colleagues into yoga and believes that they would invest in a
place with such a thoughtful design. So, compliments to Community
Architect Alvin Holm and the design team for doing a masterful job.
As we walked past the "Sphere" Ceiba Horse Field came into view
and once the group had their bearings they could really visualize the
beauty of the field. The afternoon sun was pleasant and filtered through
the trees.
After walking around Phase-1 of Ceiba Horse Field, we headed straight
towards Founders Square, then down Alegre Avenue to the entrance. This
portion of the walk is very nice because of the canopy of trees at the
entrance. The shade is refreshing, the trees are beautiful and it shows
the diversity of flora within the 115 acres of Orchid Bay.
Once we walked to the entrance and back to Founders Square we turned
towards the sea on Paseo de Caracol (Main St.) and strolled past where
the shops will be in the Town Center and then into the plaza that will be
defined by El Caracol, our two monumental crescent-shaped condo buildings.
Upon arriving at the seafront, I described the type of amenities planned
for that area. Pleased with what they saw and realizing that the sun was
waiting to set until we got on the boat, we decided to continue down Wild
Orchid Way towards the dock.
When we reached the round-about at Caribbean Way and Orchid Bay Blvd.
someone gasped. Everyone’s attention was drawn to a stunning rainbow
cresting in the sky and arching right down to the back of Orchid Bay.
We looked at each other with big smiles and someone said "If anyone
was looking for a sign, there it is."
It was an amazing experience and it was especially nice of God to jump in
there with the rainbow at the end. Ferni said he's got His cell number,
but won't give it to me. LOL.
Sorry if this has run long, but I wanted to share the moment. - Phil

LANDSCAPING - The grounds crew have been cleaning Ceiba Horse Field, planting trees and flowers in the island. The orchards are already planted. The crew built a path along the ocean to access Phase II and secondary paths coming from lots 38, 39 and 40. They continue to selectively clear lots and we have a regular maintenance schedule for the grounds.
